Fire at Madonna’s childhood home called suspicious

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Arson investigators say a weekend fire that destroyed the Rochester Hills childhood home of recording artist Madonna is suspicious.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press say arson investigators from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Arson Unit and the Rochester Hills Fire Department are investigating the Friday night blaze.

A passer-by had noticed flames coming out of the unoccupied house and called the fire department.

Rochester Hills Fire Chief Ron Crowell tells the News and Free Press the fire appears to have started in the living room area. He said it caused extensive smoke and fire damage throughout the two-story brick house.

Madonna, known then as Madonna Louise Ciccone, spent some of her younger years as one of six siblings living in the home.

$785m at stake if Guy, Madge get divorced

ritchie160.jpg

Last year, Madonna, Guy Ritchie and her three children celebrated her 49th birthday at their home in Wiltshire. An equestrian troop in medieval-style armour fought with lances on the lawn as the happy family looked on.

Ten months later, the jousting has acquired a serious nature – after months of speculation, reports suggest the couple, married for 7 1/2 years, are on the brink of divorce. Madonna is said to have turned to eminent divorce lawyer Fiona Shackleton, who represented Prince Andrew against Sarah Ferguson, his brother Charles against Diana, and most recently Sir Paul McCartney against Heather Mills.

But relations between Madonna and Ritchie remain cordial. With one acrimonious divorce – with actor Sean Penn – behind her, the Queen of Pop is said to be adamant they avoid a hostile separation.

Priority will be given not to division of wealth or their properties – which include a townhouse in Marylebone, London – but the futures of the children, Lourdes, 11, Rocco, 7, and their adopted Malawian son, David Banda, who will be 3 in September.

Music publicist Barbara Charone, who has handled the singer’s media inquiries since the beginning of her career, on Friday declined to deny the detailed tabloid newspaper reports. She said Madonna was not talking about her personal life.

To worsen the mood, Madonna’s estranged brother, Christopher Ciccone, 47, is pushing ahead with a “tell-all” biography, Life with My Sister Madonna, penned with writer Wendy Leigh, who is behind wintry tomes on Prince Edward, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Liza Minnelli.

British publisher Simon & Schuster is avoiding calls on the subject of the July 15 publication, amid reports that the celebrity’s lawyers are trying to block it.

Charone said that there would be no formal response from Madonna to the book, but of course the siblings were no longer friends: “If they were friends, would he write the book?”

Madonna Louise Ciccone met Guy Stuart Ritchie, best known for directing the film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, through their mutual friend Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler. In August 2000, in Los Angeles, she bore their son Rocco.

Just before Christmas that year they married in a lavish ceremony at Skibo Castle in Scotland, the groom wearing Highland dress tartan.

The Material Girl became a more muted “English rose”, Country Life-style wife, wearing tweeds and turning up to her husband’s favourite West London “boozer” for a casual pint.

Mr and Mrs Madge adopted the mystical Jewish religion Kaballah, donating millions to the London centre and attending faith sessions there.

In a maelstrom of publicity, she flew to Malawi in 2006 to help build an orphanage – later filing adoption papers for David Banda Mwale.

Celebrity divorce lawyer Marilyn Stowe said any divorce proceedings could leave Ritchie claiming a substantial amount of the couple’s reported £300 million ($785m) wealth, if he argues that he has been financially disadvantaged over the course of during the marriage. “Undoubtedly, her career has prospered while his has not,” she said. “The question is: did Guy Ritchie sacrifice his career and earning capacity to prioritise hers? Did he have a choice? Has it been difficult for him, living with such a famous and wealthy woman?”

Stowe said it was highly likely that Madonna went into the marriage with a prenuptial agreement.

But in spite of the crisis at Madonna’s West London home and any damage to her reputation from her brother’s book, many are predicting she will emerge largely unscathed.

The fresh-faced student and cheerleader who arrived in New York with just $35 in the early-80s has proved she is made of steely stuff in the past, turning countless disasters to her advantage.

Few would doubt Madonna’s ability to again emerge triumphant.

“STICKY & SWEET” TOUR HEADING TOWARD RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS

MATERIAL GIRL LEAVES DOUBTERS IN THE DUST

FOR BIGGEST TOUR OF 2008

Los Angeles, Calif.    June 25, 2008

Neither wind, nor rain, gas prices, nor the economy can slow down the momentum of Madonna fans who are turning out in record numbers all over the globe to scoop up tickets for the upcoming “Sticky & Sweet” Tour.  Today, Live Nation confirmed that Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium shows scheduled for November 29th and 30th sold more than 100,000 tickets in just three hours, resulting in back to back sellouts at the famed stadium.

Mexico City joins the growing list of sold out Madonna shows in Paris, Lisbon, New York, Zurich, Boston, Chicago, Denver, East Rutherford, NJ, Oakland, Las Vegas, Houston, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver all of which sold out within hours of going on sale.

To date Madonna has sold out 90% of the tickets available for her 42-date global tour, which kicks off in Cardiff, Wales on August 23rd.

With more than 70,000 tickets sold for the Sticky & Sweet Zurich Show at the Military Airfield Dubendorf on August 30th, Lisbon’s 75,000 tickets sold and 50,000 tickets sold for her Vancouver dates and four Madison Square Garden shows sold out in New York City in addition to the nearby Izod Center in East Rutherford for a total of 65,000 New York area tickets sold, Madonna has sold more than 1 Million tickets thus far on her global tour.

Madonna, whose most recent CD ‘HARD CANDY’ debuted at Number One in over 30 countries, has made it her personal mission to challenge herself to top her previous tours.  With rehearsals well under way for ‘Sticky & Sweet,’ Madonna and famed director and long-time collaborator Jamie King are creating an extraordinary never-before seen stage set, groundbreaking audio and eye popping visual effects. Madonna will be joined onstage with a new band and 18 dancers that reaffirm that this is a singular event that Madonna fans can not miss.

“With ‘Sticky & Sweet,’ Madonna is on track to break her own record as the top grossing female artist of all time,” said Arthur Fogel, Live Nation’s of Chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring.  “Her sales are extraordinary in every market she’s playing and illustrate what an unparalleled live draw Madonna is for music fans all over the world.”

Macca’s divorce lawyer lined up for encore with Madonna

She did it for Macca – now can she do it for Madonna? Fiona Shackleton, the divorce lawyer who ensured that Sir Paul McCartney retained all but £24.3 million of his £825 million fortune, has been lined up by the pop star.

Madonna, whose fortune is estimated to be worth £300 million, is understood to be seeking legal advice on a possible divorce from her husband of seven years, the film director Guy Ritchie. Ms Shackleton, 52, is the lawyer of choice for the rich and famous after what was regarded as the spectacularly well-handled split of Sir Paul from Heather Mills, who was rumoured to be pushing for £80 million.

Dubbed the “steel magnolia” for her tough but pragmatic negotiation tactics, Ms Shackleton instructed the top divorce silk, Nicholas Mostyn, QC. They secured such a successful result that Ms Mills emptied a jug of water over Ms Shackleton’s head after hearing the judge’s ruling.

Ms Shackleton also acted for the Prince of Wales in his divorce.

Yesterday Madonna’s spokesman refused to comment on the claims. But one lawyer told The Times that the word in legal circles was that Madonna had gone to Ms Shackleton after making an approach to another firm. Guy Ritchie is thought to have had dealings with a lesser-known Mayfair law firm, Forsters.

There has been speculation for some time over the marriage of Madonna, 49, and Ritchie, 39. It is thought that the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, which means that the starting point for any settlement would be a 50-50 split.

Is Madonna Being Sabotaged?

warner_brothers_logo.gif

By Roger Friedman (FoxNews.com)

Is Madonna Being Sabotaged?

I often criticize Madonna in this space for her nutty politics or her membership in the Kabbalah cult.

But there’s one thing you can’t beat and that’s Madonna live and in person.

So let’s clear up reports yesterday that her big fall tour isn’t selling out. With the sole exception of Los Angeles’s Dodger Stadium, the Sweet and Sticky tour, I am told, will outpace Madonna’s last tour significantly.

Indeed, Dodger Stadium is the only venue where Madonna hasn’t sold out yet. Of course, the show isn’t for five months. The fact that she’s sold half the stadium now for November is pretty damn impressive.

So where did this bad news come from? Industry sources don’t need Jessica Fletcher to figure it out. Warner M. Group, which lost Madonna to Live Nation, this year, has been on a tear planting negative stories about the latter organization.

WMG, as I predicted, has done little to nothing to promote Madonna’s Hard Candy album as retribution for her exit to Live Nation. That a CD with a hit single — the Justin Timberlake-Michael Jackson soundalike duet, “4 Minutes to Save the World” — has sold only 500,000 copies is an utter disgrace. But WMG only has itself to blame.

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to predict this. WMG has just this and a greatest hits album left with Madonna, and then she’s gone. Her departure is a huge embarrassment to the ailing, much mocked record company.

But here’s what’s better: I’m told Live Nation is on the very of cutting a similar deal with WMG’s act, Nickelback with hits like “The Reason” and “Photograph,” is still a contemporary hit maker act — a rarity these days. Grabbing them from WMG could be Live Nation’s coup de grace.

Live Nation is also rumored to be doing deals with Epic Records star Shakira for concerts and CDs. Is it happening? Well, hips don’t lie.

But Live Nation did not do the deal I long ago exclusively reported with the Rolling Stones. In the end, I’m told, it made more sense for Live Nation to keep putting on Stones concerts. But album wise, the group is not a big seller. They are likely to continue one off deals with Interscope, which did such a good job with their “Shine a Light” soundtrack.

As for Madonna, we needn’t worry about her or Live Nation. She’s already sold out four shows at the Garden and out in New Jersey at what used to be the Continental Airlines Arena — now the Izod Arena. She’s also sold out most of her venues in Europe. And Dodger Stadium? Those Angelenos are just mellow. They’ll get to it in time.

Meanwhile, a better question to ask is why WMG can’t cough up a follow up single to “4 Minutes.” That is, assuming they would want to. “Hard Candy” is full of candidates like “Miles Away” and “Give it to Me.” But WMG hasn’t had made a move yet. By contrast, Mariah Carey — whose sales have outpaced Madonna’s considerably — is already on her third single from her contemporaneous release, E=MC2 album.

Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Celebration

Melissa Young goes from “Redheaded Broadway” to “Blonde Ambition!” Melissa Young in Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Tribute brings original takes on an original artist at Davenports Piano Bar and Cabaret located at 1383 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, Thursdays August 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2008 at 8:00PM and Saturday April 16 at 8 PM at the Duplex Piano Bar and Cabaret in New York City. Melissa Young, has been performing in and around Chicago for over 11 years and is delighted to be presenting her newest solo cabaret performance about the woman who has taught her time and again about breaking the societal mold of what a female should and can be. Learning to make her own rules and follow in her idols foot steps is where Melissa’s passion originated and for that, she always gives credit to Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone. Brass, sass, and a willingness to show her ass (as she did this past June for a Season of Concern benefit concert) is how Melissa Young lives… thanks to inspiration from Madonna. In Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Tribute, Young performs the music of America’s most original artist, Madonna, in celebration of her 50th birthday on August 16 of this year. Over 20 of Madonna’s songs get a musical makeover through American musical idioms. Lucky Star is a tribute show that dares to ask such musical questions as: What if Madonna met Disney to revamp “Papa Don’t Preach?” or if the next hit show on Broadway was Material Girl: the musical? Jazz, Country, Swing, and even Raggae all meet Madonna, America’s most loved and hated pop icon. Darly Nitz, co-creator of the longest running cabaret show in Chicago history (The Nitz & Howe Experience) as well as the “best party in town” directs, with Mark Burnell, a long-time Chicago pianist–in and out of the jazz and cabaret world–plays and musical directs. Nick Green of The Chicago Reader has said “Melissa Young ensures that the show is open, inviting and an awful lot of fun.” Kennette Crockett of the Windy City Times has said of Melissa’s performance in BackStage Theatre Company’s dirty summertime revue Everything’s Sexy, “Melissa Young possesses all the passion and sharpness that one expects of the work.” Interviewed many times over by Lawrence Bommer and Nina Metz for The Chicago Reader, The Chicago Sun Times and The Chicago Tribune, Melissa Young repeatedly woos Chicago audiences with her wit and fast paced humor. Melissa Young, a proud member of the Chicago Cabaret Professionals, has had the pleasure of working with many off-loop theater companies, as well as starred with 1981 Miss America Susan Powell and Broadway’s Nat Chandler in Show Stoppers at the Valentine Theater in Toledo, Ohio. Tickets for Lucky Star at Davenports are $15 with a 2 drink minimum. For information and reservations, call (773) 278-1830. More information can also be found at www.melissayoung.com.
