This seems to be an appropriate song choice this week due to the US Presedential Election. This has to be one of her least loved singles among fans. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad song – it has its good moments but is also has some “what was she thinking moments” and by that I mean the rap section. I know she ‘s trying to be ironic and make a statement about the excesses of the American dream but it comes off as a bit forced and almost laughable. I do like the “Do I have to change my name, will it get me far” bit quite a bit though – it has that classic M attitude and works much better as a simple but effective statement on America and its obsession with celebrity and fame. I think this part works even better in the live “rock” version during RIT especially with the last screamed “change” at the end. I also quite like the chorus and how it abruptly changes the melody and tone of the song but still flows well somehow. The original shelved video is also an amazing artistic statement and I think it marked the first time that she truly censored herself. Despite its shortcomings, I do enjoy the song, but I do feel it could have been so much more powerful with a little more polish.

What do you think of this song? A dream, a nightmare, or something in between?
