Some may call this song boring or even self-indulgent but I see it as raw and heartfelt. Rarely has Madonna sounded this stripped back with her voice practically naked and in the forefront and it is quite breathtaking. I never understand the constant criticism of her voice when she has moments out there like this one. She may not have an 8 -octave range but what she does have is the ability to emote and tell a story with her voice that is believable and that is more powerful to me. The harmony with her own voice is gorgeous here and I love how we hear the contrast of her lower and upper register together. Lyrically here she seems to be speaking of a relationship where you feel that you have lost who you are because you feel inferior somehow or that you don’t deserve that person in your life. Coming from someone of her stature who has achieved what she has , it is a very brave thing to admit to and I’m sure some are surprised or even skeptical that she could ever feel this way. Ultimately, she does come to the realization that she is deserving and worthy of this love (I was just as good as you). This song shows her softer, more down-to-earth side and I think it’s a brilliant moment for her.
