This song was obviously her response to the backlash and harsh criticisms she received during the Erotica/Sex era. Over time though I think it has become something even more to her. It’s her response to anyone who tries to put her down, tell her she’s too old, or that she should simply give it up. It celebrates freedom of expression - artistic, sexual or otherwise and it does so with tough defiance but also a sense of humor. It’s certainly meant enough to her for her to perform it on two back-to-back world tours. Personally, it took me awhile to warm up to this song, but it has since won me over and I can’t imagine it not being a part of her catalogue. I’m very pleased that she decided to release it as a single. Although it’s commercial success was pretty much doomed from the start due largely to the strong lyrical content, I don’t think having a hit was the point – she had to have the last word in her war with the media. It also gave us the brilliant and clever visuals of its accompanying video which alone made the single release worth it. “Absolutely no regrets” – I can hardly think of a better or more appropriate phrase to sum up her entire career.
What do you think of this song? No regrets or are you sorry you ever heard it?
