Madonna is angry and she wants to make sure you know it. I have to say I was a bit taken aback the first listen through this song even though I had read a lot about it beforehand. It was very different for her and I wasn’t sure I was on board…yet. After repeated listens however, I started to see not only the anger, but the hurt, and the humor as well. This is certainly a dark tale of love and betrayal but there is also a tongue-in-cheek campiness particularly in the ending “Drive bitch/die bitch section.” It’s hard not to want to shout out those lines while driving really fast down a highway at night ( I may be guilty of this a few times . I remember playing this album for a friend who is just a casual fan and this is the song she immediately loved and became obsessed with. The only criticism I have is that she uses “bitch” too many times. Surely she has more creative insults in her bag of tricks. I think it is amazing that this was totally a different song (Bang Bang) that took a 180 when she improvised in the studio. I know she still has that creative spirit in there!
