Madonna best summed up this 1995 post-VMA moment when she said, "Courtney Love is in dire need of attention right now."
As MTV talking head Kurt Loder interviews Madonna following the 1995 VMAs, the contents of a purse are hurled over Madge’s head by what at first appears to be a drunken prostitute but turns out to be Courtney Love. Madonna looks on with a mixture of fear and disgust as Love interrupts to stammer about Alanis Morissette, shoes and her love life. After Madonna is literally dragged away by her publicist, Courtney comes fully unraveled, unleashing a string of non sequiturs that touch on Michael Stipe, her mother’s Birkenstock outlet store and an alleged sexual encounter with Ted Nugent. For a grand finale, she falls off her chair.
Here's how it went:
Kurt Loder interviews Madonna.
Courtney throws something at Madonna from below.
Kurt and Madonna turn to see who threw the object at Madonna.
Even though Madonna urges Kurt not to invite Courtney to join them, he still does.
Courtney slobbers all over Madonna and then babbles about Maverick Records and how Alanis is wonderful.
Courtney sits down and completely destroys the Kurt Loder interview with Madonna.
Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, eventually breaks up the fiasco and drags Madonna away from the mess.
The Aftermath: Courtney and Madge continued their love-hate relationship. “I like her,” Love said. “She’s funny. Every decade has its big star, and Madonna was it in the ’80s. But the ’80s are over.”
In November 1997, Madonna, Tina Turner and Courtney Love are photographed on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine's 30th anniversary issue.
Courtney Loves Madonna?
On December 15, 2006, Courtney Love announced that she wants to end her decade-long feud with Madonna because she thinks the couple will make better friends than enemies.
The bad feelings between the two began at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards when Love crashed Madonna's interview with MTV personality Kurt Loder and threw a make-up compact at her.
Love, feels it time for the two stars to put the past behind them and form a friendship.
The singer explains, "We have not spoken since her wedding. I want to make peace, but hey, I am not going to make the first move!"
